Dr. Liu is an internationally recognized leader and pioneer in gynecologic laparoscopic surgery. Over the past 18 years, his practice, which is primarily referral based, has been limited to gynecologic endoscopic surgery. He has developed numerous innovative procedures including laparoscopic Burch colposuspension and laparoscopic pelvic fl oor reconstructions. In addition to laparoscopic urogynecologic procedures, Dr. Liu also is one of the most experienced laparoscopic surgeons in the treatment of severe endometriosis and in the performance of diffi cult hysterectomies and myomectomies. He has taught laparoscopic surgical techniques and has performed live surgery demonstrations in the United States and in more than 20 countries. Additionally, he is one of the most sought-aft er surgeons for the performance of interactive live surgical demonstrations at international medical meetings. In 2000, he was awarded the prestigious Best Gynecologic Endoscopic Surgeon in the World by the European Gynecologic Endoscopic Society for his achievements and excellence.
A graduate of Taipei Medical University in Taiwan, Dr. Liu completed his residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Rush Presbyterian St. Luke’s Medical Center in Chicago. Board certifi ed by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, he is a fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. He has been a member of AAGL since 1998 and has actively participated in the Society and its Journal.
In 1997, Dr. Liu established a one-year fellowship program in advanced gynecologic endoscopic surgery, the fi rst such training program in the country. In 2002, after AAGL/SRS established a fellowship board, his fellowship program was incorporated into the current AAGL/SRS-sponsored fellowship program.
His distinguished board memberships include the Board of Trustees of the American Association of the Gynecologic Laparoscopists; Editorial Board of Gynecological Endoscopy; Medical Advisory Board of the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists and of the Journal of Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons; Review Boards of Obstetrics and Gynecology, American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Gynecologic Endoscopy, Journal of the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists, the Journal of Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons; and Advisory Board for Innovations in Medical Education and Training. He has numerous publications and presentations to his credit. In addition to his contribution to chapters in more than 15 textbooks, he edited the textbook, Laparoscopic Hysterectomy and Pelvic Floor Reconstruction.
Dr. Liu is committed to advancing the art of endoscopic surgery, to improving the education and training of its practitioners, and to eff ecting greater communication among endoscopic surgeons worldwide, so that minimally invasive procedures for the majority of gynecologic surgery will become a reality within the next 10 years.
